Joe Paterno: The Life Beyond the Legacy
By: Ryan Aukerman

I.Introduction: (Attention Getter)

·Joe has three PHD’s, one from Brown (Ivy League), one from Alleghany, and one from Gettysburg college.
·Joe has put out over three hundred wins in a career, with just one team to make himself one of the winningest coaches of all times, and still focus on what’s happening next kickoff.
·Joe  can bring in well over 100,000 people almost every Saturday for just one event to make state college/university park the third largest city in the state of Pennsylvania.
·Joe has given out 250,000 dollars of his hard earned own money to form a library just to benefit you and I alone.
·Nobody is like Joe Paterno because he is one of a kind.

Ø (Transition): That’s why I am here to talk to you about that man because it seems good in my mind to know about someone like him so close to us.
(Thesis): If you don’t already know, Joe Paterno is the Pennsylvania State University Head Varsity Football coach.
Ø (Transition):  But, Joe is also one of many other things, in which I am going to tell you about today. Consider in my presentation to you about Joe Paterno, four main points.
(Preview) Joe is a dedicated educator, leader of a football team, accomplished coach and a philanthropist.
Ø (Transition): I’ll start with Joe’s life as a dedicated man, as well as an educator.

II.Body: Four main points:

1)Joe is a dedicated educator, as well as a worker:

a.Joe Paterno comes from a very close Italian family in Brooklyn, New York.

b.He grew up during the depression, which made it hard for him to attend the private school that got him to where he is.

                                                              i.      Joe’s parents had difficulties paying the mere $20 a month that it cost to attend the private school.

c.Still, Joe Paterno’s father was a very hard worker; fortunately, Joe followed his father’s footsteps.

                                                              i.      Joe Paterno worked as hard as he could in his education to make it to Brown University. Brown then led him to two more PHD’s at two other schools. Joe Paterno loved football in every aspect, in which led him to his main entrance into college with a scholarship to Brown University. Joe learned quite a bit at brown including how to be a quarter back, and a distinguished scholar.
ii.      Joe has come a long way from Brooklyn and Brown though. He is now married to his wife Sue Paterno and has five children. Joe’s wife, Sue, and his five children have never left his side through anything, and don’t intend to. Joe and his wife have also mentored many students. Many of the students have become very successful in today’s world, in which shows that Joe is an educator.

d.Joe Paterno actually dedicates numerous hours a week to making his players study. Joe actually has a ratio in which the players must fulfill each week. This is why Joe Paterno’s players have the best graduation rate in the Big Ten almost every year.
                                                              i.      Joe Paterno has been quoted "The purpose of college football is to serve education," in an article online called “Meet Coach Paterno.”

Ø (Transition): Before all of “Joe Pa’s” experiences as a teacher he had to an assistant coach with Rip Engle and the Penn State Nittany Lions. After Coach Engle retired, Joe found himself as the leader for the Penn State Nittany lions.

2)Joe Paterno is a leader in that he is the Head coach of the Penn State Varsity football team:

a.According to Dictionary.com, a coach is defined as a person who trains a person or group of athletes. To Joe, a coach is someone responsible for making sure his players, family, and community get a good education to better prepare them for the world.
                                                              i.      In a 1994 article about “Joe Pa,” it was said that he was the best coach in the nation for getting his players ready for not only each Saturday, but the next level of sports, the NFL.

b.Joe, after 57 seasons, continues to put his players through the same intense training that he did when he started; mainly to give each athlete what they deserve.

Ø (Transition): If 57 seasons amazes you, consider some of the other things Joe paterno has done.

3)Joe Paterno, on a personal note, is a very accomplished coach:

a.Joe has been the Penn State Head Football coach since 1966.

b. Wikipedia.com states that Joe Paterno has led his team to 363 wins, 121 losses, and 3 ties (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Paterno).

c.Joe has led his team to two national championships, and thirty three bowl game entrances.
                                                              i.      22 of the 33 bowls have been wins. Joe Paterno leads division 1-A with his bowl entrances and bowl wins.

d.The American Football Coaches Association named Joe Paterno “best coach of the year” four times as said by Eric Lagergren on sports.jrank.org (http://sports.jrank.org/pages/3638/Paterno-Joe.html).

e.Among Joe Paterno’s other personal awards is the Sports Illustrated “Sportsmen of the year,” AP coach of the year, the Walter Camp Coach of the Year award, the Paul “Bear” Bryant and most importantly in 2006 the College Hall of Fame award. These are just a fraction of awards Joe Paterno currently hold under his belt; although, they are some of the most prestigious.

f.Still, Joe Paterno finds time to donate all of his attention to his players.

Ø (Transition): Donating coaching time to his players is not the only specialty Joe acquires.

4)Philanthropist :

a. A philanthropist is someone who donates money or something of value to help others for their benefit only.

b.In our community’s case Joe is a very important Philanthropist. Stated by the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, Gerald Ford once said “He's not only a great motivator of young people, but he always has the best interests of his community at heart (http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/04144/320670.stm.
                                                              i.      Joe and his wife have donated at least 250,000 dollars of their own money to Penn State on just one project.
1.The Money went to what is now called Pattee and Paterno Library. After the large donation by the Paterno’s and its completion in 1999, it’s now an important asset to our community.

c.Joe has spent countless hours with his wife at his side helping with building the community’s education.

d.Joe has also spent numerous hours helping State College with the Special Olympics program held right here in our area.

e.Recently, Joe Paterno helped donate and act on the creation of the Bryce Jordan Center, in which is used for several hundred community events.

f.Joe Paterno has contributed the very little time he has in his days to help build a basic infrastructure for this community to stand on.

g.Joe was also an active member of a campaign for Penn State.
                                                              i.      According to Penn State’s official sports website,
the campaign reached an amount of $352 million (http://www.psu.edu/sports/football/Paterno/paternobio.html.)

h.In the case you did not know, Joe Paterno was an important committee member on the building of the Bryce Jordan Center.
                                                              i.      Joe was also a donor in building the Jordan Center.

Ø (Transition): On this third case take notice to Joe’s Philanthropy by a few words taken from our University’s president Graham Spanier, and I quote:
"I have a theory that Joe coaches not so much for what he can do for football as for what he can do for the University and the community," current Penn State president Graham Spanier said. "And that makes me the luckiest University president in the country (http://www.psu.edu/sports/football /Paterno/paternobio.html).”
III.Conclusion:
(Summary): After seeing my presentation, I hope you notice that Joe Paterno is the head coach of the Pennsylvania State Varity Football team.  Joe is a dedicated educator, Leader of a football team, accomplished coach and a philanthropist.
(Closure):  Joe Pa has had his down times in coaching over the past few years, but he is an icon in this community and I’m sure with your next four years at penn state you’ll learn to understand why I’m saying that because of his accomplishments, roles in the community, and connections with his family- the penn state microcosm that your living in today.
