Limiting the freedom of the Paparazzi
Introduction
I.       Paparazzi, what do you think of when you hear that word? According to Dictionary.com, they are photographers who take candid photographs of celebrities, usually shadowing them relentlessly in their private and public activities.

II.    (AA) Please raise your hand if you read these magazines. (Visual Aid – US Weekly)
a.       Where do you think they got these pictures from? Do you ever wonder how they got such exclusive shots? Do you ever wonder what it would be like to have someone follow you around with a camera 24 hours a day, 7 days a week?

III.(CR) After conducting extensive research on the topic, I feel that I can present to you a very educated view of this very serious issue. I remember seeing a car crash on TV in 1997, seeing three year olds being chased through amusement parks, and people filing restraining orders.

IV.For years, the paparazzi have been trespassing, stalking, and endangering the lives of thousands of people. Aggressive paparazzi present a serious problem in this world, and their rough tactics should be stopped.

V.    Today I will outline to you why the paparazzi should be limited in their power and why they are a threat to a peaceful everyday existence. I will further your knowledge about who is behind their lust for the picture, and why they go through leaps and bounds to get it, and most importantly, what can be done to stop them.

T: It started with a relationship, then with a car, then with a chase, and then death. That’s the problem. (Visual Aid – Princess Diana Pictures)
Body
I.       Main point # 1: In the United States, assault, stalking a person, and personal injury are against the law. However, some people do it anyway.
A.    Think about these three stories
1.                  While driving one night, the Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and his wife were run off the road by paparazzi cars, in an attempt to get a picture of the two, according to criminal law expert Daniel J. Solove.
2.                  Reese Witherspoon and her daughter were at an amusement park when several cameramen began chasing them through the park. During this event, two park workers were injured in restraining the men, a spokesperson for Disney California Adventure Park said.
3.                  Lindsey Lohan’s car was severely damaged when Galo Ramirez, a member of the paparazzi, used his minivan to slam into her car, to get a picture of her leaving a club. Sources from MTV News Staff Report say that he is now being brought up on charges of assault with a deadly weapon.
4.                  These three stories all provide plenty of evidence to part of the paparazzi problem.
a.       In all three cases, the people involved suffered damages both to themselves and to their possessions.
b.      For one picture, the paparazzi go as far as chasing down a child.
c.       What do they gain, what does that lead to?
B.     It leads to assault, suffering, pain, violence, and a blatant disregard for the safety of everyone around.
1.                  According to reporter Patricia Treble back in 2004, Princess Caroline of Monaco brought before the European Court of Human Rights a restraining order against many paparazzi.
a.       She argued that she could not live her life in peace and comfort as long as camera operators/paparazzi (it’s okay to use the word for them—these just aren’t people with a camera were allowed to invade her property, follow her everywhere she went, and stalk her on vacation. She won.
2.                  Have you ever seen a picture of a celebrity looking unappealing. (Visual Aid – Ugly Celebrity Pictures)
a.       Imagine how they feel, having unflattering pictures shown to millions of people.
b.      I don’t think anyone in here would like that in the least.
c.       The paparazzi invade the privacy of people without regard for their feelings.
i. They cause public embarrassment, and in some cases, ruin the lives of people.
ii. There is no honor code amongst them, and even if it means tearing apart a marriage or a friendship, they don’t consider it wrong since people love reading about it.

T: The problems with the paparazzi and their methods are numerous. But the cause, the cause is simple. Supply and demand.

II.    Main point # 2: Think about what people in this country do to make a quick buck. Think of how many people work three jobs just to pay for college. Don’t you wish that there was a way to do that, that didn’t require so much work? Well, you could just be a member of the paparazzi.
A.    Magazines and entertainment channels will pay big money for that one shot. That shot of a celebrity’s new baby, or that shot of the wedding, and that’s the problem. These companies feed the fires. I myself would be tempted to work for them, if I could make $500,000 dollars every time I got “the” picture.
1.                  If you thought that Wall Street was competitive, try working the in the paparazzi business.
a.       Glossy magazines fuel the high competitive market for pictures of stars looking and acting their worst.
2.                  Money and greed are the cause of all of this.
a.       News agencies take 40% of the cut, when the million dollar pictures are shown.
b.      According to an article in The New York Times, the paparazzi and the news corporations see the massive money-making potential in the industry, and so, in their eyes, why shouldn’t they make a mockery of people’s lives?

T: The companies behind them and the paparazzi in the front lines, both need to be checked. They have gone far enough, and I have found a solution.

III.Main point # 3:
A.    I feel these solutions will legally help to limit the power of the paparazzi.
1.                  First, any time a picture is taken by a member of the paparazzi, the photographer must obtain the consent of those in the picture, before they are allowed to sell it
2.                  Second, when any company buys or receives the pictures, they must contact those in the picture and confirm that it is OK to use it.
3.                  Third, anytime a member of the paparazzi trespasses onto private property, not only will they be charged to the full extent of the law, but they will be blacklisted from every news company for a span of 5 years.
4.                  Fourth, in the event that a member of the paparazzi is involved in a car accident with any person considered recognizable by the general public, and it is proven that they were chasing them, then the photographer will lose his or her driver’s license.
a.       As well, they will not be allowed to have any picture of theirs published in any publication for 20 years.
5.                  The last rule plainly states that if any member of the press violates more than one of these rules, then they will receive a prison sentence of 1 year and a fine of $3,000.
B.     Although these rules are strict, and leave little room for interpretation, I truly believe that every American citizen should have the right to privacy.
1.                  The cost of these rules would only affect the press, if they violated them.
1.      The problem with past arguements was that the laws infringed on the press’s first amendment rights.
2.      I feel that these do not, and so I think that they are the best step in the right direction.

T: The paparazzi make it difficult for some people to live their lives, but hopefully these solutions will be the difference. Only time will tell.
Conclusion.
I.                   When a person can identify something that is a problem that can be fixed, they should fix it. I see the paparazzi as a problem, and they should be limited in their freedom in this country.

II.                For decades, the paparazzi have been infringing on the lives of people across the world. Forceful paparazzi introduce a grave dilemma in this world, and their brutal tactics should be brought to an end.

III.             As I have recognized this issue, I hope all of you understand the importance of limiting the paparazzi. I call on you to act, write a letter to your representative urging them to call on the adoption of my rules, watch real news and not something on the E! channel, and read a newspaper and not People magazine. Think of the questions I asked you earlier, and ask yourself, would you want to be treated like that. Thank you.

Pretty good outline Sam but I see a few things that need work.  First of all, your speech will be the fifth one of this series that has used the hand raising audience adaptation.  Since you used it on your last speech as well, you might want to try something more creative. Basically everything else is good besides a few gramatical errors and sentence structure stuff.-Katie

Sam this outline looks great me! just watch using Dictionary.com as a source, even though it is credible. I can't wait to hear this tomorrow. Good luck!

-Ryan Aukerman

Sam, you were very credible and it seemed like you knew what you were talking about.  For improvement, I agree with Kara in that you left your slides up a little too long.  But overall you did a great job! <3 Chelsea

SAM!!! good speech, you knew what you were talkign about and you stood bye it. The only thing is sometimes you left your visual aids up too long and i found myself looking at them rather than listening to the next point you moved on to...good job though!!-Kara

Sam!  Nice speech today...definately an improvement from last time.  You really knew what you were talking about and had amazing articulation.  The only thing that wasn't great was your visual aid...you left stuff up too long and it was distraction.  A blank screen would work well next time.  Great job though!- Katie

Sam... you were very enthusiastic about your speech today - and it really helped you to get your point across! It was delivered and organized well but i would have liked to hear some things about what paparazzi feel they are doing/not doing wrong. -- Aimee

Nice job today Sam, your speech was very effective. I also liked how you reiterated your main points at the end of your speech. I agree with Amiee though, i thought you could've looked more on the side of what they are doing right, instead of wrong, to examine both sides. But hey, i thought you had one of the best speeches- great job! - Alan
