Information Speech Outline

Penn State ROTC by Joe Kincel

I. Introduction

a. Opening statements: Have you ever sat back and thought to yourself how everything came to be, such as having the freedom to do what you want, when you want, a freedom that is seldom given to anyone outside the United States? Did you realize that there is a program right here on PennState’s campus that contributes to such freedoms? This program is called the ROTC, short for Reserve Officer Training Corps.

b. Thesis: The many programs within the Penn State ROTC program offers much to anyone entering, while granting us Americans the freedom we sometimes take for granted.

c. Main Points: The Penn State ROTC program serves many purposes that not only aid our country, but also our very own school. The different branches have different standards when it comes to privileges. While the program certainly holds some benefits, it also presents some intense demands.

Transition: First and foremost, I want to explain to you the purpose of such a program.

II. Main Point 1: Purpose of the ROTC program

a. According to the PennState

    • Army ROTC website, the program trains present students to become officers in their respective branches and serve in the United States Military. The purpose of the program not only helps students become officers to one day serve in the military to protect our country, but also disciplines those who chose a different path, enabling them to be successful in the workforce. The three branches of the PennState

Transition:

    • program offer different and special opportunities.

III. Main Point 2: Different branches

a. Different branches – The separate branches have different approaches and objectives when it comes to military tactics and standards.

i. Navy – Midshipmen, who are soldiers in the Navy, are given hands-on training on a various types of ships and fleets. They are also given the opportunity to take summer training in a foreign country.

ii. Air Force – Students in the PennState

    • Air Force ROTC make up one of the top four Air Force ROTC programs in colleges across the country. Most of the students in this branch hold many scholarships. Students involved in this branch of the PennState ROTC program are granted the opportunity for many internships, including work at The Pentagon. In 1917, the Army ROTC at PennStateUnited States. The soldiers in the Army, referred to as Cadets, are available to top-of-the-line training at PennState.

iii. Army –

    • was activated. It ranks in the top 5% of all national ROTC program and is also one of the largest programs on the eastern side of the

Transition: Upon joining, a recruit now holds many benefits, but also faces many downfalls at the same time.

IV. Main Point 3: Benefits/Downfalls

a. Benefits – One huge benefit can be the scholarship money received. According to the psu.edu website, trainees are capable of competing for scholarships worth up to 80,000 dollars. Other benefits include great internship opportunities, travel opportunities, and high caliber equipment.

b. Long Commitment/Demanding procedures – In joining any of the ROTC branches and taking advantage of the beneficial endowments, there are also some downfalls to joining the ROTC. One must endure through strenuous drills and a heavy workload of ROTC activities that can interfere with school work and home life.

c. Interview – I took it upon myself to interview my cousin, Mike Farrell, who is currently a senior at PennState

    • and a First-class Midshipmen in the Navy ROTC. For beneficial purposes, he felt that the ROTC program helps develop great leadership skills, helps pay for college, and matures one onto adulthood through intense training that makes one punctual, disciplined, and professional. You are also able to travel the world, in which he went to Italy just this past month. A downside to the ROTC program can be the fact that it is time consuming, making it difficult to balance both academic and ROTC responsibilities. Although this can be beneficial in teaching how to balance your time, he knew a person who had to quit in order to focus on academics. You also risk serious injury in intense training, along with having to deal with heavy explosives and ammunition, which he had to do. He concluded his response with “Accelerate your life, Joey.”Although the phrase at the end of his response seemed comical, it held much truth to what the ROTC program can offer to whoever may join. All together, The PennState

Transition:

V. Conclusion

a.

    • ROTC programs offer much to an incoming college student. These students can receive many benefits, such as scholarship money, travel opportunities, and discipline for the future. In return, they put forth intense training sessions to be successful for possible future military endeavors. So hopefully, next time you are sitting in your computer chair, going for a run, or doing other daily activities, you can sit back and know who to be thankful for.

Joe, Great Outline! Looks like it is going to be a good speech. You seem credible by the citations you used and the interview with your cousin. I would say it may be persuasive by talkin about the scholarships it can offer and your conclusion but since u stated downfalls that was good! -Katie C.

Joe, I was impressed with your speech today. I could tell you knew what you were talking about with the personal examples you gave involving the ROTC. Overall, your transitions, and flow of delivery were very good. Great Job. -Eric

Hey Joe good job!! Your speech was very informative which means that you did your research. Your sources were nicely incorperated and you followed the format well. -Jen

Good job today!I thought you did really well your delivery was really good you spoke clearly and not to fast. Another thing that I really liked about your speech was that you stated the positives and the negatives of the ROTC which is something that no else did. JOE!!! I loved your speech. You have a perfect voice for this subject. You remind me of my dad who himself joined the Air Force:) I loved it- Brielle

Hey joe!  Good job today.  You had a great pace, and you were very clear.  Next time maybe a little more eyecontact as well as being a little more clear/louder.  You had a clear thesis and I knew what you were going to be talking about from the begining.  You also stated a downside to ROTC which was good because you gave the other side of it.  Great speach..your a good speaker!!-- Katie Castellano

Awesome job today Joe. I thought your overall flow of the speech was very strong, that your voice was nicely projected, and you used good use of vocal variance. The only part that you could work on is using more eye contact with the audience, but other than that, great job! - Alan

Good job today. I thought that it was clear that you knew a lot about the topic, and that story about your cousin was a great addition to the speech.

 --Sam

Overall, you did a great job Joe! You had very good volume, rate and tone, but just try not to look at your notecards so often. Your speech was well-organized, it definitely sounded like you knew what you were talking about and I really liked that you used an interview, it brought an interesting and credible perspective. <3 Chelsea
