Rec Hall

INTRODUCTION

I. At a trendy, popular, large school with 42,000 people students at Penn State University need ways to entertain themselves and to stay fit and healthy.

A. What's the best place for students at Penn State to get in the best shape they've been in while not getting bored?

 

1. The Rec Hall at Penn State located on the corner of Atherton and Curtain Rd in State College PA, is a newly renovated gym that has the latest technology.

2. Being a fan of fitness and from past experiences from using the Rec Hall for the past three weeks at school, I feel prepared to educate you as to what the Rec Hall is.

 

II. Today I am going to tell you about what makes the Rec Hall one of the most talked about features at the wonderful school we like to call Penn State University.

B. Im going to inform you on some history of the Rec Hall, as to where it all began, then describe what the Rec Hall is and what makes it so popular, and then inform you on recent changes that have happened and what it currently is.

BODY

 

 

 

I. According to GOPSUSPORTS 2007, Rec hall was opened in January of 1929, it had the same good reputation, it was known of being the best. Sixty nine years ago it was considered to be one of the premier field houses in the nation.

A. What made the Rec Hall so grand was the amount of money that was put into it.

1. Rec hall was built at a cost of 572,260$ when the budget was originally set for 450,000$!

2. The project did however, employ 250 people.

B. The Recreation Building was home to Nittany Lion Basketball from 1929 to 1996, they moved to the Bryce Jordan Center.

1. The Rec Building has hosted more then twenty collegiate national championships.

 

Transition: The Rec hall has always been hosting events for large events like champion basketball games, it attracts individuals as well, just for people who need a convenient gym while attending a school such as Penn State University.

 

 

II. The Rec Hall has an activity that any active student can enjoy, ranging from gym rat to basketball champion.

A. The Central Pennsylvania Tour website shares current sports that are played at the Rec hall, are basketball, gymnastics, volleyball, wrestling, handball, squash, and racquetball.

1. People who want to watch these events have a seating area that can fit 6,846 people.

 

B. The Gym at the Rec Hall right on the West end of campus in room number 17 is a fitness center that can keep any student in shape.

1. According to the fitness section of the PSU website, a membership is required for this gym, but it can hold up to 200 members at once.

2.There is a weight room for everyone. there is a varsity training room, a general weight room, and a handicap accessible weight room.

III. The PSU sports website states that the Rec Hall is the newest gym on campus, its filled with the latest technology.

A. Some of the latest construction that the has written about is that the Rec hall has added video walls on each cardio machine provided with an individual entertainment model.

 

IV. Many changes have happened in the Rec hall, it was made in 1929, then remodeled in 1965, recently the Rec hall has made many changes to make it the huge gym it is now, according to the Central Pennsylvania tour website.

A. The Collegian magazine has written many articles on this exciting new construction that has happened.

 

1.Reconstruction began in April 2005 and ended in the fall of 2005.

2. In November of 2004 the Collegian magazine claimed that "the Penn State board of trusties approved a 13.3 million dollar final plan for the Rec hall expansion. In a March 2006 article on the Rec hall, after the project was done, it was reported to have spent 1 6.3 million.

3. Reconstruction on the Rec center was described to be "a temporary inconvenience for a long term gain."

 

CONCLUSION

 

I. During my speech I've enjoyed talking about one of my favorite places on the Penn State campus, which is the newest, most exciting gym on campus.

A. I have shared with you some of the History of the Rec Hall, along with some basketball facts at Penn State.

B. I shared some interesting facts as to what the Rec hall is, and what features are in it.

C. I have informed you on the technology at this gym, along with the construction that took place to make the gym, the Rec Center it is now.

 

II. Hopefully after talking about all the Rec Hall has to offer, and all the hard work put in to making it what it is today, you now know a little more about what makes the Rec Hall so popular.
