Informative Speech

Name: Natalie Wetherell
Topic: Ritenour Building

Intro
I.                     As students we wish an apple a day really did keep the doctor away.
II.                   However, we know this is not always true due to late nights, early morning classes, and poor dieting. A trip to Ritenour is inevitable before you graduate Penn State. The human body can only take so much, and with living in such close confines, students tend to transmit germs easily.
III.                  I had a personal experience at Ritenour and learned the location of the building and its inner workings.
IV.               As students, it is important to understand the facilities offered at Ritenour so when you find yourselves in need of medical attention, you will save time already knowing the proper procedure.

Transition: On my third day at Penn State, I woke up and noticed a very large painful blister that hindered my walking. I had a difficult time mobilizing after my first class so I decided to head over to the infirmary. I was unsure of the proper procedure to follow to be seen quickly, before our second class.

Body
I.                     Going to the infirmary can be a nerve wracking experience, but hopefully you can be comfortable with the process knowing a little more about it.
II.                   If you did not make an appointment, you walk up to the check in desk on the right and take a number. If there is a line you sit in the waiting room.
III.                  When your number is called, and it is your first time at Ritenour Building you will be escorted back to a room to meet with an office clerk.
a.      The clerk will copy your name, address, and medical history into the computer.
IV.        You will then be escorted to the examination room where a nurse will take your blood pressure and temperature.
V.                 A physician, physician’s assistant or nurse practitioner will arrive when your vitals have been recorded. He or she will inspect you for your situation in question.
VI.               Hopefully, your issue can be resolved in a quick trip, antibiotics might be prescribed, or in my case, a large band-aid and a wrap.
VII.              Once you have used the resources and believe your trip has been worthwhile you head to the check out counter and your visit will be reviewed and bill delivered. You can expect to pay $22 on weekdays and $28 on weekends for students, unless you have the school supported insurance.

Transitions: While most of you won’t make the same mistake and wear uncomfortable footwear you may need to go to the infirmary for other reasons.

Body
I.                     Besides physical health care, Ritenour Building offers services such as
a. X-rays, physical therapy, tips for better eating on dietsite.com, counseling, eating disorder treatments, cross cultural heath services, and a pharmacy.
II.                   Getting to know the clinical workers also makes for a more comfortable visit.
a.      Margent Spear, director of Ritenour and the MD on site graduated from Cornell University and Mount Sinai Medical Center as stated on sa.psu.edu.
b. The staff is made up of highly qualified professionals.

Conclusion
I.                     The Ritenour Health Center can help you with any problem, not matter how big or small. Whether you have a blister, eating disorder, or fear you might have contracted the dreaded mono, the health professionals can assist you between the hours of 8 pm and 5 pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and 9 pm and 5 pm on Wednesdays. On Saturdays, Ritenour is open between 11 pm and 3 pm and Sundays the health center is closed.
a.      If you are in need of medical attention and the heath center is not open, you can refer to the sa.psu.edu website for the telephone number of University Ambulance Service, dial 911, or telephone Advice Nurse.
b.      Ritenour can be found at the corner of Shortlidge and Pollack, across from the Thomas Building, an overall view of its location on campus can be found at mapquest.com
II.          In conclusion, like any other doctors office, University Health services abide by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountably Act (HIPAA) you have the right to your privacy and your medical information with not be revealed to outside sources, even your parents. However, if you are a danger to the health of the public outside officials can be contacted.

Natalie I thought that your speech was really good today. It was a nice way of opening up the day of speeches, and I think that you delivered it really well. Your topic was good to know about, and the way in which you connected with the audience using your personal experiences was a great tool to get your topic across.

-- Sam

Hey Natalie nice job!! I really liked how you went through your own personal experience of going to the health center. You spoke at an appropriate speed throughout. Your eyecontact was also really good. The only thing I though could use improvement is the conclusion seemed to end quickly. -Jen

Dear Natalie I really thought you did a good job today on your speech! You made it clear that you were a credible source by sharing with us that you yours self had a personal experience at the health center.  You had really good eye contact throughout your speech and really good projection.  The only thing I think you should work on for next time is your conclusion you did leave us with strong statement but as Jen said I think you ended it a little to quickly, I think you should have again reviewed the main points of your speech. But over all you did really great! -Kelsie

Hey Natalie. Outline looks great.! Looks a little short so just make sure your good on time. Also you may want to work on instead of saying in conclusion being more subtle? I like your transitions though. Your introduction is cute to. Can't wait to hear it!--Katie C.

Hey Natalie!!  Great job today.. you had great eye contact and an awesome introduction.  You were very credible since you yourself went there.  Next time you just need to slow down a little,  some areas you spoke faster. Other than that great job!!!!!-- Katie C.

Natalie, i enjoyed your speech today because it showed me you knew the thesis of your speech. I agree with others about the conculsion, with a few fillers at the end, but overall, i thought it was a job well done!! - Alan

Natalie, i loved your attention getter it was really cute and clever. the only thing i would say to work on would be your conclusion. i thought the ending was a little abrupt. <3 Chelsea
