Informative Speech
Studio 204
Introduction
I. Penn State is known to have some of the best academic resources available to its students.
a. A plethora of computer labs are available all over campus for students to complete almost any assignment given to them by their professors.
II. What happens when students are asked to put together a creative project, such as a film or a music video?
a. Most students do not own any of the equipment, or even know how to work any of it.
b. The software for editing programs is expensive and takes up a lot of space on a computer.
III. Luckily, Penn State has its very own video and editing lab called studio 204.
a. Studio 204 is a fairly unknown resource on the Penn State campus, but is expanding to not only help serve students at University Park, but at the other satellite campuses as well.
IV. Studio 204 is a valuable campus resource by giving students access to professional video recording and editing equipment, by allowing professors to work in conjunction with Studio 204 for assignments and major projects, and by providing an excellent staff to help aid students with any of the technology available.
(Transition) Hannah Sloan, Multimedia Specialist and Manger of Studio 204, states: “The kinds of resources that are found at Studio 204 range anywhere from high end digital video cameras with green screen capabilities, to digital photography, to podcasting creation and support. Once the media is created at Studio 204, we have staff in place to support the post production process, in terms of editing, compressing and authoring DVD's or otherwise.”
Body
I. The Studio can be broken down into two major parts:
1. The recording area, where you can actually use the equipment to create your project.
2. The post production area, where you can accomplish all the editing that needs to be done.
A. The recording area allows your creativity to shine through all while offering top of the line equipment such as:
a. A Green Screen: A green backdrop used to digitally create any background desired.
b. Vx2100 professional digital recording cameras
c. A variety of lights to light up any scene
d. C-stands and Tripods to position and secure the cameras and lights.
B. Don’t be intimidated. All you need to do is go online to Studio 204’s website, studio204.tlt.psu.edu, and reserve a time to go into the studio.
a. If you are using Studio204 equipment for the first time all you need to do is a 20 minute orientation process with an instructor.
b. This orientation will show you how to use the equipment, so don’t be afraid if you’ve never operated a camera before.
C. This brings us to the post production area where you can use your recently recorded media and edit it together to create your masterpiece.
a. The computers have all types of editing software ranging from complex, like Final Cut editing software, to simple programs, like iMovie.
b. Just make sure you bring your own tapes, CDs, or DVDs, Studio 204 does not provide them
c. If you feel like you are stuck ask one of the Studio 204 staff members they are there to help you come out with the best final product.
(Transition) The more familiar you become with Studio 204 the better, because now professors are starting to work with the studio, and are creating film and photo assignments for students.
II. Now you know not to assume that Studio 204 is just a luxury for whenever you feel like being creative, Faculty has become a big part of the studio.
A. The faculty now has their own section on the Studio 204 website.
a. “For Faculty,” says the website, “Studio 204 offers the opportunity to assign students engaging video projects that are ensured the highest level of production value. At the studio, students are able to use the best equipment and studio space. When the mechanics and logistics of shooting a video are sorted out from the beginning, the quality of student content can really shine through.”
b. There are also quite a few links on assignment ideas and how-to’s, so don’t rule out the idea that your final paper for your next class, could be a film.
B. In the fall, there will actually be a section specifically for faculty.
a. Getting the faculty and students more involved is one of their major goals for this year.
(Transition) With all of the video projects that you may have coming up I’m sure you wouldn’t mind some extra help, which is why Studio 204 has a truly fantastic staff.
III. The Staff occupies Studio 204 everyday and the hours they are available are extremely good. The moment I walked in I was greeted by an extremely friendly staff member, who noticed I was new and wanted to know if he could do anything to help.
A. They are happy and willing to show anyone how to work the equipment and systems.
a. Besides the 20 minute orientation, staff members are always around to help, and not just in editing they can and will help you with your filming or photography.
B. They also will help you prepare for interviews, presentations, and even with your e-portfolio.
a. Those are resources that every student can and should take advantage of.
C. Well, what if you are working on a last minute assignment past office hours?
a. Studio 204 has provided online staff members through tutorials of programs and equipment.
b. All this can be found on the studio’s website.
Conclusion
I. So I suggest to everyone to use this resource and do not let it go to waste.
a. If you are interested in going to Studio 204 it is normally located in the Pollock Commons computer lab.
b. Currently it is located in 7 Sparks, and according to the ITS website should be up and running in its normal location by the fall semester.
II. Take a chance, be creative, and don’t be afraid to experience this amazing resource.
