The HUB-Robeson Center
Introduction:
A. I guarantee that every one of you here has either heard someone refer to “The HUB” or you have walked passed that huge building right next to our dorms and possibly wondered to yourself, “what all is in there?”
B. Around since January of 1953, the HUB-Robeson Center is a useful tool to any student that provides anything from a meal, to a place to get some homework done, to a comfy environment to get together with friends, and so much more.
C. Having worked, eaten, studied, and relaxed at the HUB, I can say from personal experience that Penn State would not be Penn State without this establishment.
D. I will explain what the HUB has to offer in terms of dining, studying, employment, and entertainment.
E. Transition: We, as poor college students, need all the help we can get to make it out alive, and this includes money.
1st Main Point: Employment
A. When I was looking for a job over last summer, I was having difficulty until I was informed that I could apply for a job at the HUB’s Union Street Marketplace.
1. According to Union Street’s website, they offer student employment in any of their 11 dining options located on the ground floor.
2. They offer good wages as well as flexible hours that fit around class schedules.
3. Most students live relatively close to the HUB, not more than a few minutes walk away.
4. From personal experience, Union Street employees are friendly and helpful when it comes to learning your job and getting it done.
B. The HUB also offers employment in the Penn State Bookstore attached to building.
C. Transition: So I’m tired of working with all this food and not being able to eat any of it!
2nd Main Point: Dining
A. On the ground floor, the HUB has Panda Express, Chat’s Café, Sushi, Nathan’s, Sbarros, Mixed Greens and Joegies.
1. These eateries offer a good variety of foods from Chinese, to Mexican, to Italian.
B. Also on the ground floor is the food court, consisting of Chick-fil-a, Casa Ortega and Piccalillis.
1. The food court also offers a large dining area where students can eat with their friends.
C. On the upper floor, the HUB has Higher Grounds, another café.
D. Transition: So now that we have some cash in our pockets and some food in our stomachs, it’s about time to start on that speech (God forbid).
3rd Main Point: Studying
A. The HUB offers many places to just sit, relax, and get some work done.
1. The ground floor has multiple long tables with chairs, perfect for homework.
1a. There are power outlets positioned conveniently beside the tables for laptop use.
2. If you are looking for something a little quieter, upstairs offers more comfortable chairs and tables ideal for reading.
2a. there are multiple TVs on the upstairs level for students to watch the current news.
3. I have witnessed many groups meeting in the HUB and working on projects.
B. Transition: Alright. Can’t you have any fun around this place?
4th Main Point: Entertainment
A. Late Night Penn State is based at the HUB and provides students with various forms of entertainment.
1. There are a variety of movies shown.
2. At times, there is live music for your listening pleasure.
3. There are recreational and IM activities.
4. Many other activities for students to enjoy.
B. Of course there is food provided throughout all the activities.
C. Transition: So what does all this mean for us as students? Who cares?
Conclusion
A. The HUB Robeson Center provides students with necessary tools to get through college.
1. You can eat there.
2. You can work there.
3. You can study there.
4. You can be entertained there.
5. I would say these are the major components of any college student’s life and they are all provided in one building.
B. So next time you hear someone mention “The HUB” or next time you walk past that huge building by our dorm rooms, remember what that building has to offer and chances are, you can find some reason to make a stop.

COMMENTS:
Jesse, I really liked your approach using personal experience. Your eye contact was good and and your transitions were creative. You may want to refrain from using phrases such as "that kind of thing" more than once or at all because its sort of like a filler. Great job!
-Caitlin
Jesse, you did a very good job in your introduction incorporating the rest of the students into the speech. You may want to vary your tone at times and make your voice go higher and lower to keep the speech exciting. Good work though.
-Mark
I felt that you were really into your speech and it flowed very well. You could definitely tell that you knew what you were talking about, making good eye contact with the class while keeping it organized. Well done.
- Joe Kincel
Jesse, I think you did a very good job it looked like you practiced it a lot because you looked very comfortable up there speaking and it sounded like you really knew about the HUB
- Matt
Hey Jesse! I really enjoyed your anecdote about your personal experience at the HUB. It definitely made it more personal. I also really liked your comical transitions.
-Tamar
Jesse, I enjoyed your speech especially the way you incorporated personal stories and your sense of humor.
- Natalie
I thought your speech was well done, you gave direct information mixed in with personal experiences. You looked comfortable and even made us laugh a few times which drew us all into the speech some more. Nicely done.
- Alan
