Lisa great introduction. You are very conversational up there! Couldn't find your outline on wiki but wasn't sure if you cited something from New York times or not? You also had a nice conclusion! Next time don't clank your cards on the desk. Good job though! --Katie C.
Lisa, you did a really good job on your presentation today. I really liked your visual because it was very practical in that the pictures of fast food are slanted realities of what the food really looks like. You had good eye contact and were very enthused. Great Job. -Eric
Lisa, oddly enough your speech made me somewhat hungry for decent food, I thought that was funny. You improved a lot over your last one, and I thought it was pretty good. - Sam
Lisa, I really enjoyed your visual aid...it definitely made me think twice about eating. Like Katic said, I couldn't find your outline but your speech was very good this time. The only think I would suggest would be to not play with your hair during a speech. Other than that, you did a great job!- Lauren
HEY GUYS THANKS FOR THE FEEDBACK , I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT HAPPENED TO MY OUTLINE SOOO HERE IT IS
Problems with Fast Food
By: Lisa Nemiroff
INTRODUCTION
I. Once upon a time there was a straight A student named Michael. One day his father decided to treat his son to a hamburger from a fast food restaurant called Jack In the Box. It was a treat since Michael and his family didn't eat fast food very often. The hamburger meat looked a little red, Michael's father told him it was fine and to eat it anyway. Later that night Michael, his father and mother all had terrible stomach pains. The next morning his parents were fine, but Michael never came downstairs to breakfast. Michael was in his bed, holding his stomach covered in sheets of bloody diarrhea, by the time he got to the hospital, it was to late, Michael was gone from E.Coli, just from that one hamburger. Jenna Hansen wrote on the associated content website, the true sad story about Michael and his trip to Jack in the Box.
Today I'm going to talk to you about
Who eats fast food, and why.
What is in fast food and how it is made
Money issues and fast food
Advertising and fast food
Supersize me, the movie
Consequences on eating fast food
and of course...solution
BODY
II.-Michael isn't the only person who put himself at risk that night, according to archive.salon.com, Maria Russo informs that the average American eats three hamburgers and four orders of fries every week! 39% of American children consume fast food on a normal day.
-The problem in this situation isn't that people lack self control, the problem is the toxic food environment.
-Fast food is everywhere including places like stadiums, airports, colleges, cruise lines, k-mart, wal-mart, even hospital cafeterias!
-Americans spent 100 billion on fast food in 1997 compared to the 6 billion they spent in 1970.
-As fast food consumption goes up in America, so do the obesity rates.
TRANSITION: What exactly is in this food which makes America keep running back for more?
III. - Hamburgers are most likely made of worn out dairy cows (generally the least healthy cattle stock.)
- These cows up until 1997 were fed dead sheep and cattle along with remains of millions of dead cats and dogs purchased from animal shelters.
-Like the meat that Michael ate, 7.5% is infected. Ground beef samples taken at processing plants were contaminated with salmonella and 11.7% were infected with Listera monocytoges.
TRANSITION: Just because these foods are made of nasty things, doesn't really matter to people who are only concerned with making money, those people come right from the Fast Food companies themselves. The same people who bring you Ronald Mcdonald, are the same people, who are greedy and only interested in money.
IV.
-Fast Food has the highest minimum wage employees. According to archive. salon.com, 3.5 million people get paid minimum wage from thier fast food job.
- according to the New York Times The real money in fast food will always come from the burgers, fries, and soda. These sodas are such a concept for the fast food industry due to the fact that they can sell for as low as 0.89$! That is cheaper then bottled water.
TRANSITION: The main money maker of fast food comes from advertisements, which McDonalds spends four billion dollars on a year! according to Mcspotlight.com.
V.
-The original advertiser for McDonalds was a high school drop out named Ray Kroc.
-One of the main problems with advertisements is that they are being directed toward innocent children, even ones who aren't school age yet. The problem with this is that advertisements encourage life long eating habits.
-In a survey, 96% of school aged children could identify Ronald McDonald. According to apa.org/monitor/dec01/fastfood.html Ronald Mcdonald is compared to Joe Camel who was taken off the market due to the fact that he was marketing bad products for children, Ronald McDonald should be taken off too.
-Advertisements want to attract children, so then children can bring their families which explains why there are play places with colorful play grounds, toys and clowns.
-When children see Mcdonalds Hamburgers on Television being grown in magical hamburger patches, some children will believe anything Ronald Mcdonald has to say, which means it must be good for you.
-It is difficult for children to make informed decisions on health and therefore do not realize that they are being manipulated.
TRANSITION: These children, even sometimes parents such as Michael's don't realize the severe consequences fast food can have on the human body.
-When it comes to judging the problem with fast food, we ned to not be concerned only about how obese an individual is, but focus on how overweight the population is.
-According to USA.com frequent fast food eaters gain ten pounds more then those who didn't eat it as often.
-Those who ate fast food a lot were also twice as likely to develop an insulin disorder which is linked to diabetes.
-Diabetes isn't the only problem, cancer rates are much higher for consumers as well.
-Even people of young age are already beginning to show problems. High cholesterol is much more likely to show up at a younger age then normal, not only is high cholesterol a problem, but being malnourished also stunts growth and makes it harder for those affected to concentrate.
TRANSITION: The consequences of Fast Food were put to the test when Morgan Spurlock interviewed 20 cities including Houston Texas, a.k.a "the fattest city in the country." Spurlock then put his body on the line and ate nothing but Mcdonalds for a month, in his documentary movie "Super Size Me." According to www.rottentomatoes.com.
-The whole point of the movie is to figure out why Americans are so fat. The rules for Morgan were,
1. He could only eat what was available over the counter (water included.)
2. No supersizing unless offered
3. No excuses he had to eat every item on the menu at least once.
-The film shows how Morgan's health keeps going down, it also shows problems in school lunch rooms and physical education classes. Morgan ended up very out of shape and at risk for many more health problems. He also clearly, gained a lot of weight.
-Jeane Aufmuth reviewed the movie as "the ultimate horror story."
-After the movie was released they now call the 42 Ounce soda as "hugo." Mcdonald's claims this is different then being supersized.
TRANSITION: The movie super size me is only a small step in making the public aware on how to fix this horrible problem taking over the United States. So what is really being done? What is still left to be done? I now give to you, my solution plan.
-Fast food doesn't mean unhealthy food, even though that is the first thing that comes to mind, really all it means is convenient.
-Fast Food restaurants claim that fast food can be part of a healthful diet. Steps that have already been taken are things such as fruit are on the menu. Trends such as these are described as "weak trends headed in the right direction.
-A blogger to the New York times wrote all that "healthy salad talk is nothing but P.R. fluff."
-My plan to help make the fast food industry a healthier enviornment is to...
one, inform young people, and the customer about the horrible things with the fast food industry, especially with foods such as hamburgers and fries. These ads will be put in place to where Mcdonalds 4 billion dollar advertisements are. Places like subway could help sponsor it. and....
two, have fast food restaurants use leaner meats, whole grain bread, lower-fat fries, low sugar soft drinks and more vegetables. This way people who are still addicted to fries can still get them, and not even know that the new improved ones are being cooked with less fat.
CONCLUSION
No matter what in life, there will always be food that is healthier then the other. Some people just are very picky about what they eat. It is important though however, as my solution states to educate the public on the true harm in fast food's content. It's mostly important to educate America's youth, so that they don't end up like poor Michael. Fast Food doesn't have to be filled with organic fruits and vegetables, but the food should be made healthier. In my speech I have discussed with you Who eats fast food and why, how fast food is made and what is put in to it, money issues and fast food, the advertising world and its connection to fast food, movies made to address this problem, consequences, and solutions. Hopefully after hearing my speech you eat a healthy meal as your next and hopefully keep up a healthy, smart choice, lifestyle.
